Recommendations for books

So we often find ourselves recommending books to our team and to our delegates. Normally they are around the topic areas of health, safety, remote locations and travel.

We also have a list of books we think are required reading about training, learning and memory recall.

Here’s one that is interesting:

And having watched the recent Sky programme on Cherynbol we like the look of this:

Hostile environments training for media workers in Afghanistan.

Media workers in Afghanistan find themselves under a very high level of risk. With attacks directly against media workers and their places of work, employees should be looking to protect their staff. Part of a safety plan might be to provide media workers with safety training. This training often called Hostile Environments Awareness Training for media workers in Afghanistan [HEAT].

Lazarus Training provides HEAT training and standalone medical and first aid training courses for people working in challenging environments.

Everywhere in the world, a great risk to health is road traffic collisions.

We hope to be able to provide this essential training in Kabul later this year [2019].

Our training normally takes place over a few days and covers topics such as:

Planning before the trip

Selection of kit and equipment

Emergency planning

Dealing with people, conflict and aggression

Weapon and explosive awareness [please note this isn’t training you to use weapons]

Explosive Remnants of War & Mines

Vehicle and driver safety including transiting checkpoints

Hostile environments first aid training

Travel health

Post traumatic stress

The course duration varies depending on the course content, but normally ranges from two to five days long. All our training is highly practical, with plenty of chance to practice the skills covered in the training. You can find out more information about our training on this site, including our approach to casualty simulation training here.

But we also believe that training should be adapted to reflect the specific needs of each audience, therefore we are currently gathering feedback from media workers in Afghanistan about their training needs.

We also believe in sharing information via a number of methods, our training courses are delivered face to face, but we also provide information via our free smartphone app and via our social media platforms. The video below was a live Facebook broadcast that was made after a request from a media organisation that had changed the contents of their first aid kits.

We hope to be able to provide a very specific course in Hostile Environments Training for media workers in Afghanistan. If you would like to know more about this topic, or have suggestions for what should be covered and how, then please contact us. We have a range of medical courses which may also be of use, such as First Aid in Remote Locations and a new course for people working in Post Disaster Zones, such as after the recent floods.

You can email us on info@lazarustraining.co.uk to find out more or to discuss this further.

Safety and medical training for media workers

Lazarus Training provides safety and medical training for media workers preparing or expecting to work in challenging environments. Whether in a remote location, post disaster zone or a hostile environment, we have a training course that can help you.

2017 was a bad year for media worker safety, with 74 media workers dying in relation to their work.

Safety and first aid training for media workers

There is a need to support staff operation in all environments including the normal workplace and in high threat and risk locations. In many environments the need to provide basic life saving medical care is of paramount importance as staff may well experience time line delays from point of injury/illness to receiving professional medical care.

Organisations with an international presence may find themselves being “judged” against international standards for their duty of care and training procedures, therefore using an international training organisation working to international guidelines shows due diligence.

With approaching 74 journalists killed in 2017, the need for robust first aid training has rarely been higher.

We don’t just provide training, we are also happy to provide advice and guidance.  Here’s a video about our recommended contents of an individual first aid kit.

We pride ourselves on adapting each course to meet the specific requirements of each training group, but we do have some courses which have proven to be very popular over the years.

Safety training for staff of the UNODC field offices

With a high risk profile it might be time to consider safety training for staff of the UNODC field offices. Specifically face to face training covering topics such as first aid and medical care, alongside personal safety training.

Lazarus Training provides a wide range of first aid and safety training courses and is registered as a supplier on the United Nations General Marketplace [UNGM].

With a global presence via its field offices, UNODC staff are exposed to a wide range of risks, from those posed by the location to those posed by the work that you do. Road traffic collisions [RTC] can occur anywhere in the world, in Austria the rate of deaths due to RTCs is 5.4 per 100,000 people. In Thailand it is 36.2, Kenya 29.1, Senegal 27.2 and Tanzania 32.9.

In Afghanistan 18% of deaths are due to injury, in Colombia it is 17% and Tanzania 11%. These figures are for the general population, it doesn’t allow for the risk profile of staff from UNODC who are working to improve lives, by combating organised crime, trafficking, corruption and terrorism.

Experienced in working with large organisations and multinationals, Lazarus Training has a range of first aid, medical and safety training courses which would fit the need for safety training for staff of the UNODC field offices.

We have worked in many countries including: Afghanistan; Bosnia; Egypt; Ethiopia; Georgia; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Nigeria; Pakistan; Russia, Senegal; South Africa and Thailand.

Our training courses are designed for each learning group so that we can tailor the courses around localised needs, whilst still delivering international guidelines to a high standard across multiple locations.

Our courses work in a modular format and last from a few hours up to five days dependant on the finalised learning outcomes/content.

Most of our training courses feature scenarios, role playing events where the delegates can practice in a safe learning environment, but at the same time getting as close to real as possible. We summarise this in our #trainforreal ethos- you can read more about this here.

As you would expect from a training organisations with ISO 9001:2015 quality is at the heart of all we do. This is reflected in the planning that goes into our training events. We will share course timetables, scheme of work, sample lesson plans, scenario plans and assessment plans before the training.
