First Aid at Work Training for the Retail Sector

Keeping staff and customers safe in every aisle

In a busy supermarket environment, accidents can happen anywhere — from slips in fresh produce to cuts in the bakery, stockroom injuries, or medical emergencies at the checkout. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requires larger employers to have trained first aiders on site, and our First Aid at Work (FAW) course meets those requirements in full.

But we go further. We’ve adapted our training for retail teams, using realistic scenarios from the supermarket floor so your colleagues leave not only qualified, but confident to respond in your world.

Why this matters for supermarkets

  • Customer-facing risk: Staff often provide first response to incidents involving shoppers — from fainting, seizures or choking, to slips and falls.
  • Team wellbeing: Retail work involves manual handling, knives, machinery, and fast-paced environments, where accidents can occur.
  • Compliance & reputation: Meeting HSE standards is essential; going beyond them demonstrates genuine care for staff and customers.

What the course covers (HSE syllabus + retail context)

Our 3-day First Aid at Work course covers the full HSE-approved syllabus, including:

  • Roles & responsibilities of a workplace first aider
  • Assessing an incident safely
  • Managing an unresponsive casualty (recovery position, CPR, AED use)
  • Choking, seizures, asthma attacks and diabetic emergencies
  • Wounds, bleeding and shock
  • Burns, fractures, sprains and strains
  • Head and spinal injuries
  • Chest injuries and eye injuries
  • Poisons and anaphylaxis
  • Record keeping and incident reporting

Retail-specific adaptations include:

  • Simulated scenarios in aisles, stockrooms, loading bays and customer areas
  • Managing first aid in high-footfall environments (e.g. checkout queues)
  • Supporting lone workers on night shifts
  • Handling incidents in public spaces with customers present
  • Realistic casualty simulations (with professional role-players) to reflect supermarket incidents

How the course is delivered

  • Interactive and human-centred: Learning designed with the learner in mind, blending practical exercises with clear, evidence-based teaching.
  • Realistic simulations: Professional role-players act as live casualties, creating memorable, confidence-building experiences.
  • Data-driven outcomes: We capture learner feedback and assessment results, providing you with tangible evidence of competence and confidence gained.

Certification

Successful delegates receive the HSE-recognised First Aid at Work certificate, valid for three years. Annual refreshers are recommended, and from September 2025, are offered free of charge via our online learning platform.
