What is the First Aid at Work course?
First Aid at Work, usually abbreviated to FAAW, is a comprehensive workplace first aid qualification.
The course includes the Emergency First Aid at Work syllabus and develops the additional knowledge and practical skills needed to deal with a wider range of workplace injuries and illnesses.
It is normally suitable for workplaces where a first aid needs assessment identifies a need for more extensive training. This may include organisations with:
- larger numbers of employees;
- higher-hazard activities;
- machinery, tools or manual work;
- multiple buildings, shifts or work areas;
- employees working remotely or away from immediate assistance;
- a history of significant accidents or medical incidents;
- members of the public, pupils or other visitors on site.
Employers should use their own workplace first aid needs assessment to determine the appropriate qualification and number of trained first aiders. The Health and Safety Executive explains that first aid provision must be adequate and appropriate for the circumstances of the workplace.
Who should attend?
Our First Aid at Work training is suitable for people who have been nominated to act as workplace first aiders in environments such as:

What does the First Aid at Work course cover?
The course combines clear instruction, demonstrations, practical exercises and assessment.

- cardiopulmonary resuscitation—CPR;

Practical training from experienced instructors
First aid is a practical skill. Our courses are designed to help delegates make decisions and take appropriate action—not simply remember information for an assessment.
Delegates practise realistic workplace situations in a supportive learning environment. Our instructors have experience in teaching first aid and applying emergency-care skills in real situations. They can explain what an emergency may look and feel like, including the communication and human factors involved.
Training includes opportunities to:
- practise the skills being taught;
- work through realistic workplace scenarios;

Practise with live casualty roleplayers
Where appropriate, our First Aid at Work courses use live casualty roleplayers to make practical exercises more engaging and realistic.
Instead of completing every exercise with a manikin or another delegate simply lying on the floor, participants may meet a casualty who can speak, answer questions and respond to the first aider’s actions. This helps delegates practise the complete first aid response, including:
- approaching and reassuring a casualty;
- asking clear and relevant questions;
- identifying signs and symptoms;
- deciding what to do first;
- communicating with colleagues;
- requesting appropriate assistance;
- monitoring changes in the casualty’s condition;
- handing information over clearly.
The roleplayers and scenarios are carefully briefed and controlled by our training team. The purpose is not to frighten, surprise or catch anyone out. It is to provide a supportive opportunity to apply newly learned skills in a situation that feels more natural than a conventional classroom exercise.
Exercises are followed by constructive feedback, helping delegates recognise what they did well and identify practical ways to improve. This realistic approach supports confidence and helps participants prepare for the communication, decision-making and human interaction involved in a genuine workplace incident.
How long is the First Aid at Work course?
The initial First Aid at Work course is delivered over a minimum of three training days.
Our open courses are normally delivered on three scheduled days at our Rochford training venue near Southend-on-Sea. The current times for each course are shown in the booking information below.
For group bookings, it may be possible to agree a different schedule, provided that the course continues to meet the required learning hours and duration. Contact us before making arrangements.
Assessment and certification
Delegates are assessed through practical activities and other assessment methods appropriate to the qualification.
Successful participants receive a First Aid at Work certificate valid for three years. Before it expires, the first aider must complete an appropriate requalification course to obtain a new three-year certificate.
The HSE also strongly recommends annual refresher training to help first aiders maintain their basic skills. Read the HSE guidance for workplace first aiders.
